Looking at the cultural landscape in Germany, one should not overlook the fact that a good number of remarkable concert halls have been designed and built in recent years.
The Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg may be mentioned as an outstanding example. It is the city’s new landmark. The new concert hall in Bochum, with its shoe-box design, is also receiving great attention throughout Germany.
Concerts in these perfectly designed and meticulously aligned music halls give concertgoers an unparalleled and unforgettable musical experience. But what about the reproduction of music in our homes, provided by hi-fi? If we take a closer look at the all-important loudspeakers, for example, it quickly becomes clear that nearly all of them follow the principle of direct radiation. However, this prevalent approach completely ignores the radiation characteristics of musical instruments, which, it turns out, consist of about 20% direct sound and 80% room acoustics. This fundamental finding has led us to a new way of thinking and we have implemented it in the speaker designs of Dorn Acoustics.
