A loudspeaker system for reproducing classical music and jazz.

Looking at the cultural landscape in Germany, one should not overlook the fact that a good number of remarkable concert halls have been designed and built in recent years.

The Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg may be mentioned as an outstanding example. It is the city’s new landmark. The new concert hall in Bochum, with its shoe-box design, is also receiving great attention throughout Germany.

Concerts in these perfectly designed and meticulously aligned music halls give concertgoers an unparalleled and unforgettable musical experience. But what about the reproduction of music in our homes, provided by hi-fi? If we take a closer look at the all-important loudspeakers, for example, it quickly becomes clear that nearly all of them follow the principle of direct radiation. However, this prevalent approach completely ignores the radiation characteristics of musical instruments, which, it turns out, consist of about 20% direct sound and 80% room acoustics. This fundamental finding has led us to a new way of thinking and we have implemented it in the speaker designs of Dorn Acoustics.

The Grand Enigma delivers an exceptionally deep and full-bodied bass response, combined with resolution, airiness and a holographic soundstage that is just astounding. It seems to transform the domestic listening space into a concert hall or jazz club: the music is fully present wherever you sit. The almost palpable physical presence, indeed a musical experience imbued with an uncanny sense of “being there”, is breathtakingly real with these speakers.

The cabinet design employs a unique solution: the TMR loading of its bass-driver: a combination of transmission line (‘TM’) and bass-reflex (‘R’), resulting in a bass response that defies the Grand Enigma’s compact physical size. The custom-made 6-inch damped polymer composite woofer and the Acuflex™ hand-coated soft-dome tweeter from Morel, both with extremely robust Hexatech™ aluminum voice coils, ensure an exceptional response capability of short peak (10ms) transients up to 1000W, free of distortion. Carefully selected high-grade crossover components, inner wiring and WBT connection terminals complete this sophisticated design.
